A hijab is a headscarf worn by many Muslim women as an expression of modesty and faith. The word 'hijab' comes from Arabic and means 'covering' or 'curtain'. The hijab covers the hair, neck and often the shoulders, while the face remains visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about hijabs, fabrics, care and more
Basics
A hijab covers the hair and neck. A khimar is a longer headscarf that also covers the shoulders and chest. A niqab covers the face with only an opening for the eyes. A burqa covers the entire body including the eyes (with a mesh to see through). At byOumich, we sell hijabs in various styles.
An instant hijab is a ready-to-wear headscarf that you can put on in seconds, without folding, pins or styling. Ideal for busy mornings, sports or if you're just starting to wear hijab. Simply slip it over your head - done!
The standard hijab size is approximately 180 x 70 cm, suitable for most women and styles. For more coverage or more elaborate styling, you can choose a maxi size (200 x 90 cm). Instant hijabs are often one-size-fits-all, thanks to the stretchy material.
This depends on the fabric and your personal preference. For chiffon and thin fabrics, an undercap is recommended for full coverage. With our premium jersey hijabs, an undercap is not necessary because the fabric is opaque and stays in place. An undercap can help keep your hair flat though.
For beginners, we recommend starting with 5-7 hijabs in neutral colors (black, white, nude, grey) that match most outfits. Then build your collection with colors that match your wardrobe. Many women eventually have 15-30 hijabs for variety.
Fabrics & Materials
For beginners, we recommend jersey hijabs. Jersey is soft, stretchy and doesn't slip. You often don't need pins and the fabric is wrinkle-free. Our premium jersey hijabs are perfect for daily use and ideal if you're just starting to wear hijab.
Jersey is stretchy, soft and opaque - perfect for daily use without pins. Chiffon is light, airy and has an elegant look - ideal for special occasions but requires pins and often an undercap. Jersey is easier to style for beginners.
Medina silk, also known as soie de Médine, is a popular hijab fabric with a slight sheen and smooth drape. It's not real silk but a polyester fabric that mimics the look of silk. The fabric is lightweight, wrinkle-resistant and suitable for both daily use and special occasions.
Modal is a natural fabric made from beech wood. It's softer than cotton, very breathable and holds color well. Modal hijabs are perfect for summer because they're lightweight and feel cool. Our watercolor print hijabs are made from modal cotton.
No, a good quality jersey hijab is not see-through. Our premium jersey hijabs are fully opaque, so you don't need an undercap. Watch out for the thickness of cheaper jersey hijabs - thin jersey can sometimes be see-through.
Care & Storage
Wash your jersey hijab at 30°C in the washing machine with similar colors. Do not use bleach. Hang the hijab to dry on a clothesline - do not tumble dry. Chiffon and delicate fabrics are best washed by hand or on a delicate cycle. Ironing can be done at low temperature, inside out.
Store your hijabs rolled or folded in a drawer or on a shelf. You can also use special hijab organizers. Avoid hanging them on sharp hooks that could damage the fabric. Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration.
